What is a conference?

An 1800 person conference at the London Excel organised by Cashel Travel

A conference is a gathering or meeting of several people, usually to discuss a topic. Most of us have heard of a conference call. These can be as few as three people, usually in different places or from different organisations. This is a very cost effective way to discuss an issue or topic, but realistically it is very limited and not very practical as the numbers of attendees or organisations increase.

An academic conference, a business conference, a trade conference are just some of the most common and well known types. Depending on the number of attendees, a conference venue can vary greatly in size. They can be held in standard hotel meeting rooms, purpose built conference halls, historic castles and even huge concert arenas. There’s really no limit, as long as the conference is organised properly and within budget it can be held almost anywhere.

Other types of conferences include a symposium. This is usually a more casual event that is organised for experts in a given field to meet and discuss issues or exchange ideas. It’s normally discussed over refreshments or it can follow after a meal with drinks, or both.

A seminar is another type of conference. These are normally focused towards educating or expanding the knowledge of attendees. Almost like a big classroom.

A colloquium is like an academic conference and a seminar together. Scholars, lecturers and specialist in a particular area will present their papers or analyse data. They will then answer questions when finished. There may even be a debate too.

A workshop is a very popular type of conference. While there are lectures on subjects or any given fields, attendees will get to see demonstrations and usually they’ll get to try or take part in these activities too. This is one of the most effective ways to learn about new skills or technologies.

A round-table conference is a very focused gathering of individuals to discuss or exchange thoughts on a subject. All members are theoretically facing each other with an emphasis on equality. This is a very popular conference style for political leaders and they are very limited in numbers for attendees.

A conference is not necessarily limited to the styles or rules in the ones listed above. If you need someone to take care of your conference needs you need an expert. We can take care of your smaller round-table style right up to a seminar in a concert venue.
